Connecting a Backup HP StorageWorks ESL FC Library Tape Device to the Linux

Hi,

I'm trying to connect a backup HP StorageWorks ESL (E2400FC) Library to Redhat 2.6.9-78.0.8.EL-smp-x86_64 Linux.

The problem is that I can't see and can't create /dev/tape drives and /dev/sgx (Schr) robotic devices.

[root@g99cs4 tmp]# hp_rescan -a
Sending rescan signal to /proc/scsi/qla2xxx/0...
Sending rescan signal to /proc/scsi/qla2xxx/1...
Adding legacy tape devices to /proc/scsi/device_info

is shows me only my EVA luns that was configured before, but I did not see any ESL tape devices.

FC switch, port 20, where ESL is directly connected to my HP Blade is shows me that everything is OK:

shows me that I can see ESL WWN too:

scsi-qla1-target-2=100000e00222f251;
scsi-qla1-port-10=100000e00202f251:100000e00222f251:011400:8b;

I tried to force and to create tape and robotics devices with

/dev/MAKEDEV sg
/dev/MAKEDEV st

but it did not help me too.

I still do not see the ESL devices with
hp_rescan -a
dmesg | grep tape
cat /proc/scsi/scsi

All Linux kernel parameters looks good according with "HP OpenView Storage Data Protector Installation and Licensing Guide" "Installing Linux Clients" chapter recommendations.

I rebooted server the couple of times and it did not help me too again.

How can I troubleshoot and proceed further?
Thank you for any useful advices.

BR, Mikhail.

Hello,

Just in case:
-did you configure zoning to allow Linux to see ESL ? (obviously yes)

I haven't use an ESL in a while, I remember there is a http:// menu on ESL to configure host allowed to use robotic, did you check this also ?

Re: Connecting a Backup HP StorageWorks ESL FC Library Tape Device to the Linux

hi,

if you like connect a servers ( doesn't mater of OS ) you need to :

1, connect the library to the san and all servers

2, making zones between HBA ==> FC on LIB

3, use Command view for your library ==>

secure manager for permit to see the

robot ( mostly the master backup server )

and the tapes for the master and media

servers.

4, if you are able to see the SAN tapes, them you could install the backup sw.

PS : the Command View is depend on the library firmware.

Yes, thank you, that was the issue!
We have added my host at ESL (EML) Management Security and after that I can see it:
