Creating the 100th Volume Group

Hi.,

One of the Question in My interview,
We can able to create the Volume group by creating the Device special group file with the two digit Minor number.

But How can we create the device special group file for the 100 th Volume Group.

How can we mention the Minor Number for the Device file that we are creating for the Voume Group...

Thanks & Regards

Re: Creating the 100th Volume Group

The minor number is in hexadecimal, so the 100th VG would have a minor number of 64.

Re: Creating the 100th Volume Group

Hi:

Be advised that you may need to increase your kernels' 'maxvgs' parameter to at least one more thatn this value. Hence a value of 101 would allow 0-100 as numbers for volume groups.

About 4-8KB memory is used for *each* increment in 'maxvgs' so unless you really need 100 volume groups, choose the lowest number you can.

Hi James.,

What is the Default kernel value for the maxvgs and what will be the maximum volume group that supported by the HP-Unix.

Re: Creating the 100th Volume Group

Hi (again):

The default value for 'maxvgs' is ten (10) decimal. The allowed range is 1-256 (decimal).

Re: Creating the 100th Volume Group

And if you stop and think about it, it makes perfect sense.

The VG minor number is in hex, with possible values between 00 & FF. A hex FF is decimal 255. So if your minor number cannot be greater than 255, your maximum number of VGs is the range 0 thru 255, or a max of 256.
