DL 180 G5 + RAID 10 + RHEL

Hello,

Does anyone have experience installing RHEL 5.x on a DL 180 G5? I have 4 same size SATA drives. If I set up for no RAID, then RHEL sees 4 drives. If I set up RAID 1 on the drives in pairs, then it sees the two RAID 1 drives, and I can install RedHat, but it does not boot up, but just hangs. If I set up the 4 drives as RAID 10, it does not see the RAID 10 drive, but sees the 4 individual drives. I would like to install as RAID 10 if possible.

Thanks,

Bob

Shalom,

Red Hat has a problem booting off of complex hardware RAID. If I remember correctly it can not be booted off Raid 5 at all.

The way to go here is as follows:

Build 1 Raid 1 drive based on hardware raid. Install the OS on that.

Build all remaining drives into a raid 10 hardware raid.

Your system will see two drives, and and run very well off the raid 1 for the OS.

Re: DL 180 G5 + RAID 10 + RHEL

Hi Steven,

So what you are saying is that RedHat can not recognize a RAID 10 drive? I am sorry to hear that, because I was hoping to boot off of RAID 10. I only have 4 drives, so I can not do a RAID 1 and a RAID 10. I can make two RAID 1 drives. I tried two RAID 1 drives, but RedHat would not boot off of my RAID 1 drive. I had RedHat combine the two RAID 1 drives as 1 big RAID 1 drive, but I guess that might be too complex for it.

Thanks,

What RAID controller are you using?

Re: DL 180 G5 + RAID 10 + RHEL

When it boots up it says HP Embedded SATA Controller. When I open the box, the SATA cables go directly to the motherboard. I am not seeing anything in the regular BIOS setup -- not sure where to look in there. When I press F8 to get into the RAID setup it does not give a clue.

How do I find out?

Thanks

The bootup sequence also says

ICH9R SATA RAID Controller

Never mind. The "Hard Drive RAID" setting in the BIOS lead me to believe that this box had hardware RAID. It doesn't.
