DNS Server hpux 11i

Hey Guys,

Can anyone suggest how to configure DNS on HPUX 11i ?
What is the meaning of authorative and non-authorative DNS server ?
Is there any switch or option to make DNS server as authorative or non-authorative ?

Thanks,
Shiv

Re: DNS Server hpux 11i

Perhaps Edit /etc/nsswitch.conf

If you want name resolution to be dns first.

If not, I'd suggest SAM. Its got a pretty good tool for setting up basic DNS databases or connecting to another DNS server.

An authoritative DNS server contains the SOA or Authority record for the domain that is being questioned. In general, when you do a dig yahoo.com or nslookup yahoo.com you get an answer from a non-authoritative server, which is probably just your gateway to the Internet.

Since DNS uses a cache to provide faster answers it is possible to get non-authoritative answers that are actually wrong, if a recent change has been made to the authoritative DNS server.

Re: DNS Server hpux 11i

An authorative server means it is authorative for one particular domain . It is authorized to give out answers to that particular domains queries . A non-authorative server is normally a cache dns server which will give u answers about any other domains also, even if it is not fully authorized to give answers for the queried domain. In dns configuration the SOA directive in the named.conf file is used to specify the authorized server for that domain ( Start of Authority ) . It wont be easy to explain the full configuration steps in a forum like this, refer the bind documentations for a better understanding..

have a look at this thread http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=840826 where you will find an attachment I posted. If you have a DNS server in your network, and your new HP box is NOT going to be a DNS server for other servers, then use the attachment to create a DNS Caching server.
