DS20E cannot detect add onboard aic7895

Hello,
i want to add a SCSI drive to a DS20 using the onboard SCSI controller(AIC-7895 if i'm not mistaken).
prviously this controller was not used, i add the drive, the bios detects it ok(shows in the control-a screen).
it also appears in show device as DKC200.2.0.6.0
but after booting(tru64) in the boot log there's no mention of the controller or device.
doing a scu show edt shows every other controller/drive
tried a scu scan edt, same result

how do i add it(leave the partitioning hassles for later, i want to at least be able to see the HDD!)?(make it foolproof it's been years since i last touched a tru64)

i've also tried sizer -n file to discern what device do i need to add to the kernel, but that left me even more lost as it doesn't appears at all

thanks in advance

Hi,

You could try booting from the generic kernel (genvmunix) and then rebuilding the kernel, with doconfig, to see if that picks it the onboard controller...

Although the QuickSpecs do specify that a separate SCSI card is mandatory to connect to the internal SCSI cage.

Re: DS20E cannot detect add onboard aic7895

Rob,
thanks for the prompt response,
it's a DS20E not a DS20

i know, the disk is not on the cage, it's a non-hot plug SCSI drive we're plugging "commando" to the onboard ports, the cage is correctly configured with it's pci controller.

i'l look into how to boot with generic kernel

Which SRM firmware you have?
And what is your OS version?
For V5.1A and V5.1B you can try what Rob said.

# sizer -v
Digital UNIX V4.0F (Rev. 1229); Fri Jun 2 16:25:05 GMT-0300 2000

i don't know how to check SRM firmware

Re: DS20E cannot detect add onboard aic7895

As far I can remember, Adaptec based SCSI controllers will not work under V4.0F.
It works under V5.1A and V5.1B.
Not sure if support was added in latest NHD kit for V4.0x, but do not think so.

Re: DS20E cannot detect add onboard aic7895

You're right Vladimir... Check the release notes:

http://h18002.www1.hp.com/alphaserver/download/ds20e_gr_rn_b02.pdf (page 2)

"Adaptec devices and the USB are not supported by Tru64 UNIX V4.0F.
Tru64 UNIX V4.0F does not support the integrated Adaptec devices or the USB on the DS20E. You may get error messages."

Re: DS20E cannot detect add onboard aic7895

thanks guys, i should've started by posting the version number, wuld've saved me 4 hrs of fruitless work, hehe

i ended up piggybacking it to the external connector of the LSI controller that drives the cage and routing the cable back inside, not pretty but it worked
