Data Encryption (Possible using SAM)?

How can I encrypt the data which is being backed up using SAM (fbackup)?

Re: Data Encryption (Possible using SAM)?

Probably only if you have hardware encryption for your tape device.

Re: Data Encryption (Possible using SAM)?

Shalom,

If you used tar, you could encrypt the tar file using PGP for HP-UX and then write it to tape.

fbackup writes directly to tape via a tempoary disk file, which can't be encrypted on the fly.

Also I kind of remember fbackup being declared end of life, not to be put in HP-UX 11iv4.

Re: Data Encryption (Possible using SAM)?

Thank you much. If we must depend on hardware encryption feature of the tape device, then while restoring data, does the hardware decryption (on tape device?) ensures decrypted data comes back on disk?

Please provide some brand names wherein such hardware encryption feature is available on the tape device. (I could also ask the storage manager if the existing device comes with any encryption feature).

Is there no third party encryption s/w available to work with SAM? I went thru' the HP site and looked at various modes of security available in HP (and their manuals, though not exhaustively). Does HP not have any add-in encryption software that would work with SAM?

Thank you much, Mr.Protter. I will bear your advice in mind and speak to the person who is concerned about data encryption.

Yes provided you manage and supply the correct key.

You can ask these questions in the Storage > tape forum:

This isn't really SAM, it's fbackup.

>Does HP not have any add-in encryption software that would work with SAM?

As SEP said, fbackup isn't being brought forward. You need to look into a product like Data Protector.
