Desktop Application in Windows XP Professioanl

Hi...

This is with regards a problem in HP desktop D260, We have come across a problem in couple of HP desktop D260, It's takes longer time to open a word document when it's plugged to the network and if the network cable is remove it opens faster. We have repaired the OS(XPP), updated the office patch, windows patch, scanned the system for virus or sypware. But still the problem is persisting. Please suggest if there is any tool or any other solution to resolve the problem.

Thanking you in advances and awaiting reply.

Re: Desktop Application in Windows XP Professioanl

Hello Srinivasan,

I had a similar issue and got it resolved by removing some items from Startup. You can also try that if you have'nt yet tried. Refer this weblink

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=bph07134&lc=en

Look under Start up section to know what not to remove. Uncheck every other option. Hopefully this should work.

Let me know the status.

Good Luck !!

Srinivasan:

What networking protocols do you have activated on the XP Pro system? on the other systems in the network?

Re: Desktop Application in Windows XP Professioanl

Srinivasan,

Just an FYI: You mentioned in your post that you scanned for spyware. Do you have Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta1 installed. If so, it may be the cause. I'm not sure if you can follow this link or not to the correct page, so I'll paste it, and then also paste the text of the original question and reply. http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?pg=2&cat=en_US_955b708b-965d-416e-a21e-43d9bdc4b138тМй=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.private.security.spyware.appcompat&fltr=&mid=65ee373e-51b9-44ba-a90e-f9c53e043acd

QUESTION: Since installing MS AntiSpyware about 6 months ago, when I attempt to open a
file by double clicking on it in Windows Explorer, or I attempt to open an
internet site from a link in an email, the application, whether it's IE,
Word, Excel, Adobe Reader, ad infinitum, takes about a full minute to open.
I can almost walk down the hall to the kitchen and get a cup of coffee before
it opens.

However, if I open a program first, then open the document or whatever it
happens to be, speed is normal.

I'm not sure it's MS AntiSpyware, but the issue appeared exactly the day I
installed it. I've spent about 2 hours on google looking for other possible
causes and found nothing.

XPPro, SP1, patches current except for SP2 (breaks too much stuff in my
friends' experience, 2.4GHZ Pentium 4, 512MB RAM.

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.615, defs 10/21.

Anyone else experiencing this or have a possible resolution?

ANSWER: I believe this is related to Microsoft Antispyware. Similar issues have been
posted throughout the beta, without any clear rationale for who sees this
issue and who does not (most of the 18 million installs do not!)

Since this appears to be related to the individual install on a given
machine, I would consider trying some things:

1) Control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft Antispyware, change,
update.

See if that changes the behavior

2) Control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft Antispyware, "click here
for support information", Repair.

See if that changes the behavior

3) Uninstall Microsoft Antispyware, reboot, reinstall Microsoft Antispyware

See if that changes the behavior

4) Uninstall Microsoft Antispyware, delete \program files\microsoft
antispyware and all subfolders. You will lose access to anything in
Quarantine, history information, and customized settings. Then reinstall
Microsoft Antispyware

See if that changes the behavior

If none of these does the job, I would hesitate to dig deeper, and would
consider removing the beta and awaiting beta2 which will be out before the
end of the year.

Re: Desktop Application in Windows XP Professioanl

I'd be willing to bet that you have Norton or McAfee anti-virus installed with "scan all on access" turned on. With the network connected, it will scan your document and sniff the other drives. With the network disconnected, it will do the same thing but not bother with the now non-existant network shares.
