Re: Does Ignite need to be installed to create/rebuild using make_recovery
You need to have Ignite installed to run make_recovery. The last time I checked Ignite was still free, and easy to install.

SolutionYou also get some other functionality when you install Ignite/UX. The install does NOT require a reboot, so you can install during the day without impacting the machine.
Once the make_recovery tape has been created you can boot from the tape to resotre a system. Since you are booting directly from the tape, nothing has to be installed on the system you are recovering. It could even be a brand new system with nothing on it.

Re: Does Ignite need to be installed to create/rebuild using make_recovery
Download and install the latest version of Ignite from here:
http://www.software.hp.com/products/IUX/index.html
Be sure to use the 'make_tape_recovery' in lieu of the older, less robost, 'make_recovery'.

Re: Does Ignite need to be installed to create/rebuild using make_recovery
You must install the Ignite UX software in order to run it.
The make_recovery command allows you to create the lif area on your tape and backup the entire volume groupe vg00 AFTER the lif on tape.
You can also use this tape ( generated by make_recovery ) to restaure any file or directory from vg00 ( you had first to rewind the tape with "mt" command to put the tape's head in the begining of the second mark on tape ).
you can clone servers using the ignite tape by interupting the restaure process and giving other parameters like hostname , ip address, ...
Good luck
