Go for Rafeeq Ur Rehman's CSA guide.

You will not get a book better than this for beginners

If you're going for a fundamentals book, Rehman's is much too deep and much too Admin focused. Look for Marty Poniatowski's stuff, I can't remember whether he did a generic HP-UX or if he was all Admin focused as well.
