Error: "bdf: Cannot open /etc/mnttab: Permission denied"

This is a new one on me.
Friday I extend /tmp by 50mb.
I was trying to install some software and I needed a little more space.
All seemed to be well then.
This morning I get this error "bdf: Cannot open /etc/mnttab: Permission denied" I checked the rights on /etc/mnttab and it is rw-r-r. I looked at the data in the mnttab and seems to be ok. It still has the /CDROM mounted that I mounted using 'pfs_mount /CDROM'. This will not unmount telling me the NFS is not restopnding.

syslog shows the nfs errors this morning from trying to 'pfs_umnount /CDROM'.
And some of these when using SAM to look at the file system.

Any ideas?
Marty

Re: Error: "bdf: Cannot open /etc/mnttab: Permission denied"

First make sure that the setuid bit is set on /usr/bin/bdf and that the file is owned by root --- but I doubt that thisis your problem. The pfs_xxxxx commands are rather notorious for causing problems similar to yours and the only fix that works is generally a reboot.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Error: "bdf: Cannot open /etc/mnttab: Permission denied"

Hi Marty:

If you did a PFS-style mount, and now cannot unmount and/or have problems running 'bdf', I'd plan a reboot very soon. Things (performance) are probably only going to deteriorate.

You don't offer the HP-UX release that you are running. There have been patches to obviate the need to do PFS-style mounts for RockRidge formatted CDs for a long time unless you are running 10.20.

If you are on an 11.x system, I would search the Patch Database for the requisite patches (3); install them and save yourself future grief.

Re: Error: "bdf: Cannot open /etc/mnttab: Permission denied"

I do not understand "...setuid bit is set on /usr/bin/bdf ..."
I guseeing it is theses s's in the rights.
-r-sr-xr-x 1 root bin 28672 Mar 21 2003 /usr/bin/bdf.
I supected it might be a reboot.
Anything else that might I might do to delay the reboot until the weekend?

Yes, the "s" is the setuid bit. And, no, I can't think of anything that would help in delaying the reboot.

Re: Error: "bdf: Cannot open /etc/mnttab: Permission denied"

JRF,
This server is 11.0 We cand upgrade it right now. I want to get off 11.0 and up to 11.whatever.
So for now it may just be a reboot.
Question, Reboot should clean this up with out hitches? I know that any reboot can show up things.
I would like to wait until thew weekend because the intire network will be down. We need to redo all of of our IP addresses. And it there is a problem with that and there will be. I will have time to finish up my issue.

Re: Error: "bdf: Cannot open /etc/mnttab: Permission denied"

Hi Marty:

In the meantime (before moving to 11.11) you can download and install (with a reboot) the following 11.0 patches to enable native mounts:

# PHCO_26649
# PHKL_26450
# PHKL_28060
