Fedora Core 3.Impresions

Hi all,

I have in my linux box a Fedora Core 2, but before upgrade it to FC3 I would like ask for your impressions with FC3.
Is it more stable?, Is it more resource consuming?...
and any thing you can tell me to prepare my upgrade.

I will be very appreciate for your responses. (points reward)

Frank.

Re: Fedora Core 3.Impresions

I think its more stable. I think they've improved hardware support a little more. All around it seems solid.

Hardware support, especially on the laptop is not as good as Windows. Everything else is better.

The 2.6 kernel is wonderful.

First impression since its less than two weeks available is cautiously favorable.

Re: Fedora Core 3.Impresions

Cautiously favorable sound just about right ah dear prudence, having said that In am, as is speak upgraging a small desktop just to test get a feeling with this new version, I had installed a version 3 from 4 downloaded iso, this installis from scratch on an other system and this as been a no problem install.

I am doing the test migration before I migrate in a few day's a more crutial one.

What I have seen after the scratch intall is a workable system I have not found a problem yet.

But I will let you know this upgrade turn out, at the moment it is taking a long while to find what it should upgrade.

cross-fingers.

will keep you informed

Re: Fedora Core 3.Impresions

hi frank,

i have tested fc3 and about the stability i can't say anything because fc2 crashed neve on my computer and fc3 also didn't crash until yet.

my impression is that the graphical layout is very nice, hardware accelartion works out of the box (tuxracer, ...) but the technical background seems to by very similar to fc2.

best regards,

johannes

Re: Fedora Core 3.Impresions

As I do with most RPM-based distros that are not used in the enterprise, I did a "Install Everything" install of FC3 on my test box and used it for a week. (Athlon XP 1800+ with VIA chipset, 786MB Ram, 40gig hd, NVIDIA video card)

I don't think one could use the word "Stable" to describe this product. Items that work fine when compiled from source (pretty much all of KDE, xpdf, Evolution) are broken in FC3 when you install all packages.

Konqueror was broken, Evolution would crash regularly when using IMAP, and xpdf (when launched from FireFox stable) would loop & open new processes until the box died.

If you have FC2, just up2date it. I'm pretty sure trying to make this junk usable isn't worth 2 days of your life.

Re: Fedora Core 3.Impresions

Wow! Ted, you don't like "very much" rpm's based distros. Do you?.

In any case, thanks for your appointment.

Thanks to all for your answers.
