File systems with 9i RAC

Ok, We recently put together an RFI with several vendors about going to 9iRAC. I was always under the impression that with 9iRAC you HAD to use raw partitions on HP RISC or Integrity servers. One particular vendor is saying you can now use file systems. How true is this statement?

Re: File systems with 9i RAC

The intitial Oracle releases in the 9i release 2 series came out raw only. I remember hearing the same thing at HP-World 2002.

Since then they've added functionality for filesystems.

A.Clay Stephenson did some actual comparisons on running the Oracle database both ways and found with 11i 64 bit the benefits of going raw were marginal.

So the statement of the vendor is true, you can use filesystems.

Re: File systems with 9i RAC

Wouldn't you need to purchase Veritas Cluster Services for this? I didn't think you could share file systems between hosts with VxFS alone.

Re: File systems with 9i RAC

Mike,

It looks like you do need Veritas Veritas Database Edition Advanced Cluster if you want the shared file systems.

We are suppose to get this functionality in HPUX when TrueCluster cluster file systems are ported into HPUX.

Re: File systems with 9i RAC

Oracle 9iRAC?

Don't even think of implementing it without Veritas products -- particularly Database Edition. One kool feature is ODM - Oracle Disk Manager, that interfaces directly with Aeritas DBED, and which allows the DBA to manage storage, relocate hot areas. Since DBED feeatures QuickIO - you get Filesystem manageability with raw device performance.

AND -- drumrolll.. since Veritas now owns Precise software, you have a top to bottom infrastructure that's truly robust and can easily be managed and monitored.

Re: File systems with 9i RAC

hi mike,

Please allow me to also add these 2 points:

1. also have a look at the metalink document 182177.1 - Step-By-Step Installation of RAC on HP-UX

2. i would also investigate into a 10G RAC solution.
