General question for HP dat tapes
i have two tape drives both dds-4. My question is that when i try to read the contents of any tape different from dds-4 its imposible as i get an error said 'tape error cannot read tape'. the operating system i work is HP-UX 11.11. The problem is that i knew that a dds-4 tape drive can read/write dds-4,3,2 tapes, and can only read dds-1 tapes but this is not in my case. Please help me.

Re: General question for HP dat tapes
Shalom,
Its probably a software problem with the application used to write the tape. If its the same, there may have been an error writing the tape in the first place.
Please try the tape in the original machine.
It could also simply be bad media.
Please try other media and provide details on how you created the tape.

Re: General question for HP dat tapes
It very well could be a software problem. I would try manually coping some files to the tape and attemping to read it from the other machine.
try on source machine:
cd /etc
tar cvpf /dev/rmt/0m ./hosts #or whatever the tape drive device
on destination machine:
cd /tmp
tar xvpf /dev/rmt/0m #or whatever the tape device
...jcd...

If I had only read the instructions first??
