Getting the following message when executing mailx

:/etc/mail # /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: line 0: cannot open: Permission denied

Checked /etc/mail/sendmail.cf and it's permissions are 444. Any other ideas on what to check?

I'm no sendmail expert, but perhaps the sendmail daemon isn't running?

Re: Getting the following message when executing mailx

sendmail is not enabled on this system. We are forwarding mail to a SMTP Relay.

Re: Getting the following message when executing mailx

Hi Ken,

Could you check the permissions on /etc/mail and /var directory ?

# ls -lad /etc/mail
dr-xr-xr-x 2 bin bin 1024 Aug 22 13:21 /etc/mail
# ls -lad /var
dr-xr-xr-x 23 bin bin 1024 Feb 4 2005 /var

Re: Getting the following message when executing mailx

That was it!

It was the permissions on /etc/mail. It was set to 544 and I changed it to 555 and all is working again. Something changed on this in the last 24 hours and I think we have a handle on why. Thanks very much everyone.
