HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNIX!!!!

The Unix operating system turns 40 this summer.

Here are a three articles from Computer World that are quite interesting regarding the history of Unix.

Re: HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNIX!!!!

Time for a little lesson in Dutch language:

Unix is pronounced as "U niks", in English: "Nothing for you"

We -used- to finish that sentence "...en wij VMS, anders hadden wij ook niks" (... and VMS for us or we would have nothing as well"

But especially today that sounds pretty harsh, as a lot (most??) of Engineering ataff "celebrate" their last working day.
... and all of us VMS bigots feverishly hope that the new people in Bangalore can achieve (and are allowed) the quality standards we are used to.

As for myself: I am currently training in Linux, so I guess shortly I will also become a member of the U*X family.

Proost.

Have one on me.

Re: HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNIX!!!!

Having introduced to the computers by writing programs in Fortran IV on a Burroughs mainframe, and transitioned to programming in HP's rocky mountain basic OS, I was first introduced to UNIX with none less than hp-ux V 5.1 and hated it with every bone in my body.

This was before I could really understand the versatility of UNIX. Then I dipped into dark days of DOS V 2.x then 3.X, did my time with windows 3.1, pathworks and no less than VAX-VMS V 5.x before I could transition to being a UNIX guy full-time in mid '90s and never looked back.

Happy 40th b-day to UNIX and hats of to all of you making it better by helping the less fortunate...

Who's got the cake now ?

Re: HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNIX!!!!

I started on HP-UX during the PA-RISC bring up. We also used it to get to multiple systems instead of a switch box with a terminal.

Re: HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNIX!!!!

Like Mel, I started major programming on Burroughs iron, from the B300 (in assembler) to the B3500 (COBOL of course) and B5500 (ALGOL and Fortran). Like Dennis, I did some field reviews of the 840 Spectrum (first PA-RISC box) but did not jump into HP-UX until the late 1980's. Compared to the prehistoric days of version 7, 8, and 9, today's HP-UX is lightyears ahead and still a solid OS after more than 20 years.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of Unix's demise are greatly exaggerated. I'm sure there is a countdown clock somewhere for the year 2037 -- I'll bet HP-UX will still be kicking, perhaps on a Timex with 10 TB of RAM and 512 processors.
