HOSTNAME LENGHT
This is the only way I can reply to the question on hostname lenght.
It is defined in sys/params.h
and on hpux 11 is :-
#define MAXHOSTNAMELEN 64 /* max length of hostname */
So a hostname of :-
The_computer_in_the_building_next_to_the_bus_station_by_the_lake is feasable (count 'em)

Re: HOSTNAME LENGHT
Hi,
Although it is possible to set it longer than 8 chars, a whole heap of things will not work as they were written when the maximum length was 8 chars and still assume to be so.
Best to stick with 8 chars

Re: HOSTNAME LENGHT
Hi Trevor
I was trying to answer a question on the lenght of hostname but could not get the reply button to work so I posted the answer this way and got it wrong which I indicated in my second post.
It's late 22:20 UK time and I am going home before I type rm -R * at root as superduperusr.
bye
