HP 9900ci unable to get DMA working in Mandrake 8

I just purchased this drive and am not able to get DMA to work. THe fastest it will go is PIO under LM 8. The os tries to enable dma but fails. I have a Maxtor ultra 100 card with ide1 connected to master WD 30 gig hd and slave HP 9900ci. the Secondary ide is connected to two 60 gig hds. I do not use onboard ide becaause my board is a VIA board with the much publicized IDE bug. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks
