HP Netserver 5/100 LH

I am an intern not too knowledgable with linux. Am trying to install RedHat 7 on an HP Netserver 5/100 LH, has the Mylex DAC960 P Disk Array Controller with 3 2g hard drives. Also has an Adaptec Aic7855 Scsi controller with a tape drive and the cd on it, Tobshiba XM5301TA. Tried booting with a floppy(server bootdisk), some of the output on screen indicates a failed boot-
request_module[block-major-3]: Root fs not mounted
VFS: Cannnot open root device 03:08
Kernel Panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:08
also indicates what looks like Scsi not being recognized-
Scsi: 0 hosts
Scsi: detected total
Partition checked:
autodetecting Raid arrays
auto run...
...auto run DONE
I would apreciate any help and direction to go at all.

Re: HP Netserver 5/100 LH

Hi,

>VFS: Cannnot open root device 03:08

This error message 03:08 means,
kernel try to mount hda8 (First IDE controller, primary IDE HD, 8th partition) as "/" but failed.

Scsi: 0 hosts
means, no scsi controller has detected by kernel in your floppy.

My question is, is this floppy created for this 5/100 LH server?
If yes, your system should have IDE HD as system disk. (But you have mylex card with disks, which is scsi.)
And no scsi drivers are in the kernel.

My next question is, have you installed Linux in this box?
or Do you want to start to install Linux from now on?

If you want to start to install Linux into LH, try booting from CD-ROM.
If you think you have OS in your HD, try booting from you CD-ROM by "rescue"mode.

type rescue at boot time.
Then Booting from CD-ROM, then shell prompt "#" will appear on the console.

FYI
>autodetecting Raid arrays
>auto run...
These are not hardware RAID.
But linux software raid.

Good luck

Re: HP Netserver 5/100 LH

Masanari,
Thank you for the interest.
The floppy is just and image from the RH 7.0 Unleashed book. Definitely not specific to the Netserver. I do not know how to make a custom disk. The machine at present is running a demo copy of Win2kPro, probably about to die off. About ready to quite on it as all the compatibility lists I read say it can't be done. They have an upgrade driver set for the newer Netservers but it seems nothing for the older retired ones.
Any suggestions.

Re: HP Netserver 5/100 LH

What version of the DAC 960 do you use? the hp OEM HPDA is not supported, the Mylex is supported after certain BIOS releases. You will have to load aic7xxx to get the onboard SCSI detected.
Running SuSe on an LHpro with updated DAC960PL BIOS without any problems so far.
