I was asked by management to check if there is any guidelines to restart HP Server (running on HP-UX) how many times per year.
Currently, we have preventive maintenance once per year but out management said once per year to restart HPUX server is not healthy.
Pls advise.
Thanks & regards

Re: HP Server need to restart at regular basis ?
I have seen servers running years without reboot. These servers are designed in such a way that it could run continiously in good air conditioning environment.
Whenever there is a requirement like patching, application deployment, configuration changes or scheduled maintenance windows it needs reboot.

SolutionNormally the answer is you should only need to restart an HP-UX server twice a year when you install bi-annual patch updates on it.
This will vary depending on what applications you are running. A single application with a memory leak will cause you to need to restart the server or underlying application more frequently.
I've heard stories of HP-UX systems being run for three years without a reboot. To go so long may be best practice, but is possible.
It's not windows. It need not be booted three times a week to keep it functioning.
