HP-UX 11.00 Install

I'm trying to install HP-UX 11.00 on a newer machine - RP5400.
Unfortunately my original install CD does not recognise that chip.
I know its a long shot, but has anyone any idea where I can get one that does ?
Thanks,

Kevin

At some point, any particular version of
almost any operating system stops gaining
support for new hardware.

I'd guess that it's (well) past "long", but
you'd need to find the (last) "supported
hardware" list for 11.00 to be sure.

The usual obvious question at this stage is,
"Why 11.00?".

Re: HP-UX 11.00 Install

Kevin, myself, like Steven am wondering why you'd want to install 11.0 - but I can guess it's that you need some backward compatibility with something old.

Based on that, I've yet to see a case where the application even cared about the difference between 11.0 and 11.11. I used to run a dev environment in 11.0 and the it's crp environment in 11.11 until I had time for an upgrade, and the binaries and settings between them from a software standpoint moved and converted well without change or recompile.

You might consider testing your software with an 11.11 installation first, if you're looking for backwards compatibility to 11.0.

Re: HP-UX 11.00 Install

Thanks for the comments guys.
The reason that I'm trying to get 11.00 on another machine is that the original machine, a HPD370, is well past its sell-by date and the support for it is quite expensive, so we happened upon another newer RP5400, that we thought would do for another couple of years.
We, unfortunately have to support clients that still run 11.00.
Also, we wouldn't dare give our clients 11.11 software, bearing in mind that HP are not particularly good at backward compatibility, a la 10.20 to 11.00.
I guess I'll just have to chase up our account manager to see if he knows where I can get a newer 11.00 Core CD.

Re: HP-UX 11.00 Install

AFAIR you need 09 or 12 2000 version of 11.00.

But maybe your application works with 11.11 too.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

(You mean forward.)

From 11.00 to 11.11, there was a program called "I guarantee it" where HP said applications would just run on 11.11. So there is a good chance you'll not have problems.

Re: HP-UX 11.00 Install

Yes, sorry I did mean forward.

My problem is that I have to compile on 11.00, so that clients on 11.00 can run the programs.

I'm sure that I would have backward compatibility problems, if I compiled on 11.11 and tried to run on 11.00.

Perhaps not. In some cases, with some extra
work, it's possible to link programs using
old run-time libraries, and get executables
which will run on an old system. You would
need to suck all the critical bits off an old
system, and persuade (coerce?) the tools on
the new system to use the alternate/old
stuff as appropriate.

If your new compiler uses a new object-file
format, or some other such gross change is
unavoidable, then you tend to be doomed.

Right. How many are still on 11.00?

Most likely. Since this is not supported, there is no list of "things that won't work".

>Steven: In some cases, with some extra work, it's possible to link programs using old run-time libraries, and get executables which will run on an old system.

That's a start. You also need old headers.

Then you use the old tools.

There is an unsupported SDK root in new enough compilers, that does provide for this but the user must set it up:
