HP-UX 11 fresh install problems

Hello,
I'm new to HP-UX and am trying to give a freash installation of HP-UX 11 on a system that has two SCSI hard drives and external SCSI CD-ROM. There is already some HP-UX installation on the HD but I would like to erase/format that and make fresh installation since it won't boot to login screen and gives many errors (the system came from previous user). The two CDs I have are "Easy Stup HP-UX 11.00". This is the first time I use anything PA-RISC or HP-UX based so here are the problems:

After powering up the system I press "enter" to stop the boot process and arrive in some kind of "menu" where I type:

"search"

The system than searches for boot devices and lists, huh, no less than 16 of them, from P0 to P15, but there is no external SCSI CD-ROM I have connected on that list. Than I remove both hard disks and search again and list now gives only one device, P0 as "TOSHIBA CD-ROM". Then I type:

"bo P0"

..and get to "Welcome to IGNITE-UX" which displays the following devices:

DISKS: 0
CD/DVDs: 1

Ok, than I plug both SCSI hard drives back in after which IGNITE-UX displays:

DISKS: 2
CD/DVDs: 0

..so basically it can "see" only hard drives and no CD-ROM, or when hard drives removed, only CD-ROM but no hard drives.
Then I look at "H/W Details" in IGNITE-UX menu:

DISK DRIVES:
8/16/5.0.0
8/16/5.1.0

..but again no CD-ROM. I then remove disks and get:

CD/DVD-ROM DRIVES: 8/16/5.0.0

..but now no hard drives. I try "Install HP-UX" and get:

"there were no disks"

..but after plugging back disks in I get:

*CHECKING CONFIGURATION FOR CONSISTENCY

ERROR: Failed to load config files from server or media

loadfile command failed, retry?([y]/n):

..so that's it. I've hit a dead end here. Among other info that may help - here's what I get in "main menu" after boot:

config menu:
Autoboot: ON
Auto search: ON
Auto start: ON

Processor: 0
Boot ID: 2

secure flag: OFF
fastboot: ON
Primary boot path: SESCSI.0.0
Alternate boot path: SESCSI.6.0

BootTimer [0-200]
lanconfig: Not supported on this hardware.

Path command:
Primary boot path: 255.0
Alternate boot path: SESCSI.6.0

..so that's it. that's all I now so far. Again, I would like to install fresh HP-UX 11 from external SCSI CD-ROM over whatever is on that hard drive(s)..

Thank you for any information.

Re: HP-UX 11 fresh install problems

Check the SCSI addresses for the disks and the DVD/CD ..

Probably have two with the same HW address which will prevent the system from seeing both.

Re: HP-UX 11 fresh install problems

You are seeing a SCSI ID conflict.

If you look at the output from your searches you see:

DISK DRIVES:
8/16/5.0.0
8/16/5.1.0

CD/DVD-ROM DRIVES:
8/16/5.0.0

The CD drive has the same SCSI ID as one of the disk drives. That is NOT going to work.

You need to change the SCSI ID on the CD drive to something else. Maybe try 3.

There should be a mechanism on the back of the drive that allows you to change the SCSI ID. Power the CD drive off, change the ID, power it back on.

Then do your SEA again. You should then see the CD drive with a string of 8/16/5.3.0

Re: HP-UX 11 fresh install problems

Hi,

Yes it is a SCSI conflict. You can change SCSI ID of the CDROM drive or as you told it is an external CDROM drive, you can attach it too some other controller if you have.

If you have problems changing the jumpers/DIP switch in CDROM, you can install on one disk with hardware PATH 8/16/5.1.0 and removing 8/16/5.0.0. After installation remove CDROM and put and configure other disk.

Later you can change SCSI ID of CDROM and reconnect.

Re: HP-UX 11 fresh install problems

Absolutely a SCSI device conflict.

You can gather more information by booting off the old installation and running the ioscan command.

If not poossible, you need to pull the CD-ROM and change the address eliminating the confict.

Re: HP-UX 11 fresh install problems

I tried changing the numbers on the back of CD-ROM - they go from 0 to 7, but there is still no CD-ROM listed after "search" or "scan" function. Only when I pull out hard drives there is a CD-ROM listed..!?

Re: HP-UX 11 fresh install problems

Did you power off the device, change its id, then power it back on? If not, you scsi id change never took effect. I have always had to power devices off and back on for an id change to take effect.

One way or another you have to get the CD/DVD to recognize the change in scsi id. You should be able to use any number between from 2 thru 6 . 7 is normally the SCSI controller itself, so you can't use that.

Re: HP-UX 11 fresh install problems

Yes, I tried that with powering off and then back on with all numbers from 0 to 7 but there is no CD-ROM listed:

Main Menu: Enter Command > search

..which lists "Path numbers" from P0 to P15, device paths from "SESCSI.1.0" to "SESCSI.1.7" and from "SESCSI.0.0" to "SESCSI.0.7". All 16 "Device Types" are listed as "ADTX AXSITS2532R 014C". No CD-ROM on the list. But as soon as I pull out hard drives:

Main Menu: Enter Command > search

Path Number Device Path Device Type
----------- ----------- -----------
P0 SESCSI.0.0 TOSHIBA CD-ROM

..and that's it. I can then type "boot P0" and get to "Ignite-UX" but can't Install since as soon as I plug hard drives back in, there is no CD-ROM "seen". I tried "boot SESCSI.0.0" and "boot P0" with hard drives in but, of course, it won't boot from CD-ROM. The CD-ROM I'm using is not broken and is fully functional on other workstations. Is there anything else that can be done in this "Command Main Menu" (some kind of Self tests, ..). I have "FASTBOOT" set to "ON" if that means anything? Other config. settings I already posted above:

config menu:
Autoboot: ON
Auto search: ON
Auto start: ON

Processor: 0
Boot ID: 2

secure flag: OFF
fastboot: ON
Primary boot path: SESCSI.0.0
Alternate boot path: SESCSI.6.0

BootTimer [0-200]
lanconfig: Not supported on this hardware.

Path command:
Primary boot path: 255.0
Alternate boot path: SESCSI.6.0

____________
..thanks for any help if possible.

Re: HP-UX 11 fresh install problems

OK, lets try this then.

Turn power off to the ENTIRE machine.

Power off the CD drive, set the SCSI ID to 3, and power it back on.

Now power the machine back on. When it gets to the spot you can interrupt it the boot again, do so.

Do your 'sea' at the menu again.

Maybe something is being cached if you don't boot the whole thing. There shouldn't be, but it's possible.

Re: HP-UX 11 fresh install problems

Its possible the disk or CD is malfunctioning and setting the SCSI Id will not help. Then it will be necessary to diagnose and replace the peice of hardware that is bad.

I'm thinking and hoping due to economic considerations its the CD-ROM
