HP-UX is peeky for keyboards and mice on PA-RISC

I had a b2000 running 11.23; i used a4tech bw-9 mouse and a genius keyboard with it (actually the first ones came to sight in a local store).
I did not realize i was really lucky everything ran smoothly.
I replaced b2000 with b2600. The problems started with keyboards: the modern genius keyboard with multimedia keys was not recognized by the firmware, the system kept switching to a serial console. Well, i purchased identical old genius keyboard and plugged it in; everything went ok (i took the mouse from the old system) until i upgraded to latest quality pack: the Xhp stopped seeing mouse at all, though ioscan shows it properly in place. I decided it was one of X server patches to blame and uninstalled them one by one until i got the first one from 2005 installation CD - and it did not work either. I tried a few different mice: genius does not work at all and a different a4tech model does, though the wheel is not recognized, only 3 buttons are available. Any ideas which mouse to use to get the wheel supported or how to rollback the patches properly to get my old one working? Please don't ask me to downgrade to 11.11 - it has some important locale features missing and not all software gets updated for it in time.

Although the connectors are the same, PC peripherals such as keyboards and mice are not always compatible with high end Unix workstations, especially older models. Since you were in the PC store, the chances of everything in there working on HP-UX are not good. This is especially true for old workstations nad devices that never existed when the b2600 went out of production. I would get devices for these boxes with a free exchange to try different devices. You might search the patches and release notes for 11.23 to see if there is any mention of keyboard and mouse changes.

Also keep in mind that HP-UX 11.23 (11iV2) is not "officially" supported on any workstations (B, C and J class machines).

Shalom,

HP-UX 11.23 is not a desktop operating system.

You can use it to browse the web, you can install many desktop applications on it, and if you like compiling stuff, you can make it work.

I have never seen a middle mouse button work on any Version of HP-UX direct connect.

As noted your chosen OS is not supported on this hardware.

Best bet is to connect to this system via X Windows from a windows workstation or better from a Linux workstation via gnome-terminal or ssh -X

As i said it worked smoothly 2.5 years ago on my b2000. Just plugged it in, applied patches and well - all 5 buttons were functional. Now i cannot reproduce that :-( even with the same (not similar model, but actually the same) mouse.

Hi,

it could be one of the usb patches too!
We use original HP mice (2-button plus wheel) for our c-class ws, but of course with 11.11.
Spare P/N is 390938-001 and 395737-001 at the newest c8000.
