HP d325sm constantly reboots

My HP 325sm dual boots WinXP PRO and several versions of Linux. When I am working in Linux the computer will reboot a couple of times per hour and take me back to the login screen. Windows doesnt reboot at all but every version of Linux does. I use Xandros/Foresight/Frugalware and Ubuntu mostly and all of them reboot. Any ideas appreciated.

Re: HP d325sm constantly reboots

Check the contents of /var/log/syslog and
/var/log/messages. There should be some
indications of the problem there.

Also consider switching to the a text mode
console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and watching for any
messages before reboot.

Re: HP d325sm constantly reboots

Thanks for the info. I will give it a shot and will probably have to post the results since most logs I have seen in Linux are Greek to me.

Re: HP d325sm constantly reboots

I don't see anything unusual in the first
log extract. This is a failure to load
some font directories that are already loaded.

The second log shows normal restart activity.
No indication here that there is an actual
reboot.
exiting on signal 15 (Standard termination request.)
syslogd 1.4.1#15: restart.(Standard startup message for the logger.)

If you were rebooting several times per hour
you should see several syslogd startup
messsages per hour. These are reliablely
written to the log.

I suspect you are getting the timed out
during inactivity. This is a standard
security feature. We require it at work,
and it has to be mannually configured for
Windows. The Unix reactivation screen
often looks like a login screen.

Re: HP d325sm constantly reboots

Ok thanks for the info. I guess it is timing out, even though it never did it until recently. Appreciate the help.
