Re: HPUX 11.11 (v1) and HPUX 11.23 (v2) on N4000-44, N4000-55, N4000-75 and K580
The document at http://docs.hp.com/en/5992-1978/ch02s03.html says that 11.23 is supported by all N-class server (aka rp7400 according to new name). This information makes me happy :) BUT
I was cross verifying this fact with EOSL matrix document at http://activeanswers.compaq.com/hpux11i/downloads/public_hp-ux_systems_support.pdf
which says N4000 means only model A3639A and A3639B and rp7400 means only A3639C. I was assuming all these as N-class servers (I have N4000-44, N4000-55 and N4000-75).
Based on above information, can you please answer these question:
1) N4000 (A3639A and A3639B) says "N/A" under last 2nd column (B.11.23 support). What exactly this means? are these N-class not compatible with 11.23? contradicting with above information.
2) rp7400 (A3639C) says "64" under last 2nd column (B.11.23 support). This means only this N-class are compatible with 11.23?
3) What is the new name for model A3639A A3639B? Looks like we can not install 11.23 in these box.
Any help is appreciated.

N Class is the same thing as rp7400. These support 64 bit 11.23.

No.

If the A3639A is an rp74xx class box HP-UX 11.23 will install and is supported.

The main difference is that newer models support higher CPU speeds.
Hope this helps!

Re: HPUX 11.11 (v1) and HPUX 11.23 (v2) on N4000-44, N4000-55, N4000-75 and K580
As mentioned previously, migration will almost always fail. If the OS succeeds, special drivers or applications won't work. If these are production machines, I would not risk the extensive downtime that might occur when problems occur. Instead, get another n4000 as a test and staging server. Cold-install 11.23, then add all the current patches, and finally, the applications. Verify that they work normally. This is the decision point where you leave the target server at 11.11 is things don't work.
If all is well with the test server, make a VG00 Ignite backup of the test system and another VG00 backup of the target server. Review the documentation about Ignite images, especially concerning mirrored disks and additional volume groups. Then load the test system image onto the target system and finish the configuration.
