HPUX 11.23 Login Incorrect after typing in login (not to password yet!)

Hello,

We have a HP server running HP/UX 11.23 that has been running for a while. We are now having a problem via telnet, console or XDM. When a login is typed in, it immediately comes back with "Login incorrect" (immediately...without typing in a password!)

I can boot into single user mode and have verified that their is plenty of space on all of the filesystems.

Anyone have any ideas?

Shalom,

While in single user mode, check the logs.

I've seen this happen when the root file system is full. 11.00 HP-UX had a nasty habit of zeroing out the /etc/passwd or /etc/group file when that happened.

Soon as that happens, this behavior begins.

Normally /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log or other logs will catch when this starts up and have a message that gives you a clue as to the cause.

Actually, after doing some additional extensive digging online without coming up with any relevant results, I was 'inspired' to compare permissions on the /usr/lib/security directory and the files within it with another 11.23 system.

I found that the all of the lib files in this directory had permissions set as 755(RWXR-XR-X), while the working system's lib files had permissions set as 555 (R-XR-XR-X).

The system is back up and happy...

Thanks anyways!
