HPUX Connected Hosts Logging Out of Fabric

Hi, I asked the following question on a non-HP forum, but I think I should have really just asked it here...

I'm a storage guy, so please understand I know very little about HPUX, but... We are having an issue with HPUX connections to our SAN logging out of the fabric after a unspecified amount of time has passed.

Has anyone seen this before, and/or is there a setting I can let the HPUX folks (at our site), know about that can be tweaked?

Shalom,

Have not seen this.

What kind of storage.

See if /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log shows any messages related to this. Please post.

Please post the SAN errors.

Re: HPUX Connected Hosts Logging Out of Fabric

Thanks for the quick reply.

I don't believe there will be anything from the HPUX side to view. We see this in the SAN switches. It mimics what would happen if you literally removed the fibre cable from the switch. We've only seen this with HPUX connected hosts.

BTW, it's EMC storage and EMC has told us that this is common with HPUX.

You should then replace the emc diskarrays with hp diskarrays, problem solved. ;)

Kidding aside, Ive never seen an hp-ux host log out, out, of the fabric, without a good mostly host/sanswitch hardware/sanswitch firmware/"sanswitch maintenance", related reason.

If different hp-ux hosts are however logging out of the fabric then the chance is very small that the problem is due to (hardware problems) of the hp-ux hosts.. (a particular host with 1 defective fc hba is possible, multiple hosts with a defective fc hba is quasi impossible)

From the hp-ux host you could check some fiberchannel related statistics with
fcmsutil /dev/<0/1/2/..> devstat all
fcmsutil /dev/<0/1/2/..> stat all
fcmsutil /dev/<0/1/2/..> vpd

Would check also , single initiator zoning of the hosts, i.e. every zone has only 1 host and one/multiple storages, same sanswitch firmware on all sanswitches, licensing issues with the sanswitches, "not merged" sanswitches..

Re: HPUX Connected Hosts Logging Out of Fabric

Hi Chris,

Your point - "You should then replace the emc diskarrays with hp diskarrays, problem solved. ;)" Believe me, I'm a previous HP StorageWorks guy and now solely work with HDS (same as XP's). So if you ever need anything in that area, just shoot me a note.

I had never heard of an operating system - in this case HPUX, automatically logging itself out of the fabric either for any reason other than a reboot or system shutdown.

Unfortunately my persistent nature will not allow me to drop this subject until I receive some kind of reason. It sounds like it might be site specific. If I get any more information or details I will post it here.

Have a great day, and thanks to everyone that contributes to this site and these threads.
