Would you mind to give s the exact version of java you are using (java -version).

A good chance is that if you upgrade to the newest java release of your version, the issue will be fixed.

Java version is 1.3 actually Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM 1.3.1 1.3.1.17

Very common problem in many Unices. I have
seen in on Solaris servers, for example.

The Java upgrade will almost certainly resolve your problem.
