How do I boot from (make_recovery) tape ?

Hello,
using
make_recovery -A -c -V -i
I produced a bootable tape from my HP-UX 11.00 System.
How can I boot from it?
I thought, it would work by stopping the boot, searching boot devices (sea) and then selecting the tape.
But 'sea' does not find the tape?!
Thanks in advance!

Your thoughts are correct; (sea) should find your tape device.

Sequential Media will be the tape. Try looking for this again

Depending on the type of hardware you could try to manually work out the hardware path of the tape drive, then when you interupt the boot sequence and it asks for a boot device inter the path e.g 8/16/5.0

As a second bit if advice, when it asks to "interact with IPL" , enter No, its a pain to get the boot command correct otherwise.

Hello Rainer,
the only bootable device sea finds is the hard disc (FWSCSI.6.0.)
Unfortunately there is nothing to choose ...

Hi
You are right,

Stop the boot sequence
Search for the bootable devices
Boot from sequential media ( with tape placed in drive ofcourse)
'No' at interact with IPL

Are you trying to ignite the box on which you created the recovery tape?. If so, there is no reason why it shouldn't show up the tape "sequential media" unless if the cables are distrubed or the scsi id got changed.

What is the model of your system?

Hi Praveen,
the tape is in the drive.

I have written the tape yesterday on the same WS (C3700), and since then I haven't changed anything ...

Hi John,
I've tried to use the hardware path of the tape, but unfortunately it could not be found.
It seems to me, that the system does not search the tape as a bootable device at all...

Re: How do I boot from (make_recovery) tape ?

Hi Marco

Fire up your machine normally and do an ioscan -fnC tape and make an note of the hardware path.

Reboot - stop the process and do a "sea" - do not interact with ipl.

then try booting using the H/W path.
