How to reduce Swap Size on HP-UX 11 (B2600) Machine

At present i'm working on a client problem.
For this i need to simulate the client environment.
My machine swap size is 1024.
At present client machine swap size is less than
my machine (512).

Can i reduce the swap size. if yes how ?

Regards,
Rajeesh

The easiest way is to Use SAM>Disks& Filesystems>Swap. Reducing swap will need a reboot. You may get some degradation in performance on your own machine though. Hope this helps a bit.

Hi:

I presume that this is secondary swap space, and not primary. In that case, yes, you can reduce swap space, but this will require a reboot.

Simply delete the swap definition from /etc/fstab and reboot. Afterwards, you can 'lvremove' the device swap logical volume.

Hi,

If the swap is secondary, remove that logical volume using lvremove and delete that line /etc/fstab file.
If swap is primary use SAM to decrease the size, In either case machine need a reboot.

Re: How to reduce Swap Size on HP-UX 11 (B2600) Machine

Hi,

If your primary swap size is 1GB and you want to reduce it to 512 MB, it is not possible. You'll have to reload the OS. If on the other hand you have secondary swap, such that primary swap +secondary swap = 1GB and primary swap <=512MB, you can reduce / remove the swcondary swap to make the total swap = 512MB.

Hope this helps.

Re: How to reduce Swap Size on HP-UX 11 (B2600) Machine

Except in very large memory systems, HP support folks(most of them) recommend swap being twice physical memory.

This is especially true in the 4G or less memory range, and more urgent with HP-UX 11.x

I tried getting away with less on a test system. It worked well until we finished loading oracle and Oracle9ias(Application server, real pig, web based).

Then system performance degraded util I doubled swap space with a secondary swap area.

The machine involved was an older box D320, but most I've talked to say twice physical memory. It should not be a problem reducing secondary swap space. I've never tried chaning primary.
