IBM SDD driver 1.6.3.0 on HPUX ia64 11i V3
We have an IBM SAN which uses a driver on HPUX to talk to each other. Since IBM's latest version is for 11i V2, I installed this version
on 11i V3. Which offcourse doesn't work very well.
Is there a way to fool HPUX that it sees the driver as 11i V3 (and I don't mean "install incompatible software)
Thanks for any updates.

Perhaps I should have said HP Services or HP Storage Works? :-)

What else were you going to suggest?
You would first have to do that to get it on the box. Whether it would work, is another question.

Sorry you can't install 11.23 software on 11.31 and expect it to work. Sometimes yes, often times no. You need to wait for support for the OS from IBM.

Re: IBM SDD driver 1.6.3.0 on HPUX ia64 11i V3
Thanks for your andwers.
Yes I have contacted IBM. They are willing to help despite the fact that it's not supported. But if I can solve it at the hp side it's ok with me too.
Thing is that can see my virtual disks on the IBM box with ioscan. I have a feeling that HPUX refuses to fully load the driver
because some string tells it it's V2 instead of V3.

Re: IBM SDD driver 1.6.3.0 on HPUX ia64 11i V3
ioscan is simply issuing a device ID request and means nothing in terms of driver functionality.
There are various definitions of "not supported".
Sometimes it means "not tested, might work"
Other times, it means "ain't never going to work".
Drivers almost always fall into the "ain't never going to work" category. Drivers interact with the kernel at a very low level and since 11.31 is not a minor upgrade from 11.23, the kernel is quite different. IBM must supply you with a rewritten (and tested) driver. If you could somehow jam the driver into the kernel, there is a good probability of a system crash.

Re: IBM SDD driver 1.6.3.0 on HPUX ia64 11i V3
as you know 11.31 uses 2 kind of disk device definitions. one is old ones /dev/dsk/cxtydz
second one is /dev/disk/disk1 ...
if you choose second kind of device definitons you dont have to use ibm sdd or similar multipath device drivers. in any case disk array must be supported by os.

Re: IBM SDD driver 1.6.3.0 on HPUX ia64 11i V3
Thank you for your reply. That sounds very hopefull. I'm not really up-to-date with the new features of 11i V3 (and IBM neither I guess). Could you help me with some url's where I can find more info on this subject? I would really appreciate that.
Kind regards
Michiel.

Re: IBM SDD driver 1.6.3.0 on HPUX ia64 11i V3
Solutions are always simple.
I didn't even try if sam sees the disks since it didn't with 11i V1.
But now it does!
I removed the driver and added the disks to a new vg without any problem. I am now doing some tests with it.
Thanks for putting me on the right track.

Kind regards,
