Install HP-UX on remote server

Hi,

I need to install HP 11iv3 on a server with only a CD drive (PA RISC). So how can I do it? Can I put the dvd in another server's dvd drive and mount it and use nfs to share it, then install from there? Or do I have to swcopy the entire contents of the dvd to the remote server and set that server up as an Ignite server?
whatever

Re: Install HP-UX on remote server

Shalom,

You have a few options.

1) You can have the boot DVD placed in the CD/DVD rom drive at the remote site. You then connect to the console, and control the install process. The console will need to be configured with an IP address. Subsequent products can be installed via nfs share. swreg -l depot can be used to register depots.

2) Build an Ignite server and use swcopy to build an OS install point that works completely from NFS.

I like the second option better. swcopy to build an install point will save a lot of time long term.

Re: Install HP-UX on remote server

Thanks very much Steven. I will go with the second option as there are a couple of servers that will need to be built this way.

Do you know where I can find the docs on how to set this up with Ignite and nfs?

Thanks again,
S.

Re: Install HP-UX on remote server

in ur case, installing from ignite server is only option

you could have use ur desktop pc's drive if it was a integrity server(virtual dvd mapped through ILO)

Stev>> i was not aware of your first option . i know it is possible in case of integrity servers by mapping remote drive through ILO. Does PARISC server's ISL identify a remotly avaiable dvd ? how we can use it , it wolud be great if you can explain in details.

thanks in advance

Re: Install HP-UX on remote server

Thanks Steven.. I think I misunderstood ur first option. I thought you were talking about a posible way of booting PARISC server from a remote dvd drive without bootp(ignite) server like bboting/installing from virtual dvd in integrity server.

so both the options ,ignite server will used , client has to lanboot using ignite ,
option 1 , os will be on dvd and it will be exported to client, option 2-- os media will be copied to disk and shared to client

Ignite server is probably your only option.

Hope this helps!

Re: Install HP-UX on remote server

Well... he could arrange for the remote server to have its CD upgraded to a DVD, or perhaps get an external DVD connected.
