Install HP-UX without X

How to quickly install just the most basic CLI oriented HP-UX system without X. Ignite-UX is not an option here.

Re: Install HP-UX without X

Shalom,

By default the Ignite-UX install of HP-UX from HP media does a non-X windows install. HP has a window system for the install designed to be used from a serial console.

Its not Linux and there is no X windows based installation at all.

Re: Install HP-UX without X

Deselect all the GUI, CDE and X stuff that you don't need in the installer window.

I agree.

Not correct. Did you ever install hp-ux on a workstation? There is a text based and a X-based installer (if VGA is available).

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Install HP-UX without X

Torsten, I was trying *exactly* to do that, deselect all those X apps, but for some reason the installer didnt let me do it...

Re: Install HP-UX without X

If you are installing on a workstation I guess it is the Technical Computing Operating Environment (TCOE) - the graphical part is IIRC a default part of this.

Any problems if you install it anyway?

Hope this helps!

Re: Install HP-UX without X

Without X ... Why would you do that ? What is the problem with it being installed ?

If you don't have an X-display, CDE won't be configured and nothing about X will be started on your system.
If you don't want to use ant X-display, just disable the startup scripts that would do that.
So, in my humble opinion, there is no reason to take the pain to find out how to remover all graphical packages from your install. Just go ahead with what you have, and disable software after installation.

Our servers have no display at all (except for the console through the iLO) and X *IS* installed. Why ? Because I use my PC as a graphical X-display and to be able to do that, you need the X-libraries on your HP-UX system.

Re: Install HP-UX without X

Wim,
I can very well ask the same question - why do I *need* X if that is going to be a headless server?

UNIX was always the most simple, lean and unbloated operating system.
Most of my Linux servers are around 400 megs (base), and include only the most basic tools and utilities. Why do I need to maintain so much unneeded bloat like X and its libraries?
pure ssh is a perfectly nice way to administer such servers.

Re: Install HP-UX without X

Torsten, no problems at all.. I just had to uninstall all X apps after installation. But the whole installation procedure was a pain (very long!) because it had to use 4 of 5 cd-roms.

Is there a way to just use first cd-rom and force select only interested packages?

Re: Install HP-UX without X

AFAIR there is a "minimal" option selectable while installing (don't know what is included there). To reduce all the disc changes you may consider to use the DVD instead of the CD.

Hope this helps!
