Installing differents Oracle versions on the same HP UX server

I have installed Oracle 9i Standard Edition on a HP rx2600 HP UX 11i
I want to install Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition on the same machine in order to manage another database
Is it possible ?
How can I do it ?

Hi there,

What user did you use to install the standard edition of oracle 9i? If it is something like oracle91 use a oracle92 user for the enterprise edition.

You can also check for this information at OTN(Metalink).

yep, no problem if you use another user and ORACLE_HOME.

But you better rename your installed software catalog which is common for all Oracle software (/var/opt/oracle?)
And put the original backup if you want to upgrade/path/add software to the SE.

Hi Lucas,

Yes you can install Oracle 9i Enterprise edition on the same server as long as you make sure you do it in a different ORACLE_HOME.

And also save you previous installation logs to a different name or location, so incase of installation errors you will be looking at the correct logs.

Remember to have good backups.

you can but make you you don't accidentally overwrite the previous version files (control files, datafiles!! So do a backup first.

If you follow the outline in the OFA (Oracle Flexible Architecture). You should have an $ORACLE_HOME aready at $ORACLE_BASE/product/9.2.x/se and build another one at $ORACLE_BASE/product/9.2.x/ee.

I would install each database in a separate ORACLE_HOME and make sure that each databases has a separate SID (System identification).

Also, under different os user so that i don't have to toggle between the two databases, by changing the environment variables, ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID.

Are you sure you cannot manage the other DB with the same version of Oracle 9i?

A long time ago I had a problem like that
but with two different "major" release (ex. 8.1.7.3 & 9.2.0.5 ).

Anyhow I think you will use a GUI installation (Oracle Configuration Assistant). So the assistant itself will suggest you a new ORACLE_HOME and you have to create another user which will use the new environment. ( for ex: oracle2 is the new one; you have to put in /home/oracle2/.cshrc this line
setenv ORACLE_HOME / )

Your Oracle license will let you install multiple versions of Oracle on any Unix platform (does not work well on Windows). If you are installing EE why not use it to manage the one you are currently managing with SE. I believe it may be as simple as installing the new version (in a new ORACLE_HOME as described by other respondees) Then shutting down the DB under SE, change the ORACLE_HOME of that instance and restart it under EE. This will work as long as the SE and EE versions are the same. Since Oracle is licensed by CPU and not by how many instances are on the server there should be no other licensing fees required.

Obviously you can do it with different ORACLE_HOMES.

In practice it might be a better idea to standardize as the two ORACLE_PRODUCTS both want to consume a lot of resources and may push you into swap depending on your memory and SGA configuration.
