Java Screen disappears...

I had Oracle installed on an L-1000 which I have removed. I am now trying to install Oracle 817 on the same machine. I have updated all the env settings and the kernel parameters remain unchanged from the previous (working) version I had on the machine.

The installer runs, asks all the questions but as soon as it starts running the installation itself (2 - 3 %) the java applet just disappears and the installation terminates.

I have checked the installActions & syslog but cannot find anything abnormal.

I have also used this same set of CD's on an identical machine just a few weeks ago and all went through succesfully.

Any ideas please.

Thanks

Carlo

Re: Java Screen disappears...

do you have a core file?
Did you install the recommended JRE kernel params?
Xserver patch up to date, what is your X windows display, - native or reflection style?
It works for me (tm)

Re: Java Screen disappears...

Sometimes Oracle installs hang when trying to run swlist commands to check that required software is installed.

Sometimes that command hangs because on UX Oracle doesn't test properly.

When the freeze occurs, log onto the box and do this..

pf -ef | grep swlist

If you have a command hanging, kill the process and the install should proceed.

Other questions:

Have you installed java 1.2 or java 1.3?

java 1.4 is not certified with Oracle and should not be used.

Have you installed all required java patches?

http://www.hp.com/go/java

Click on java 1.3 then patches.

Follow that doc, make sure each and every patch on that list is installed, it includes listing for all three supported HP OS'

There are required oracle patches on the metalink site.

Reply if you need that list. I'm not at my desk and don't have my bookmark's file.

Re: Java Screen disappears...

You might want to verify that you removed everything from the ORACLE_BASE directory. You should not have a oraInventory or oui directory. Oracle will not recognize that the software has been removed unless it was removed from the oui directly. It could be failing looking for a file that it expects to find but doesn't.

Hope this helps,

Re: Java Screen disappears...

5 points to each, all valid points.

However, the solution was the network. The client has a lot of network problems resulting in the Java applet not being able to refresh and it just crashes out.

But as the favourite saying goes...you can take a horse to the water...

Thanks to all.

Re: Java Screen disappears...

Darn. Could have diagnosed it with a ping or traceroute?

I'd still make sure I'm all patched up bud.

Good luck.

Re: Java Screen disappears...

hi,

I had the problem too during my installation.

The solution was to launch the installation using the FULL PATH (e.g. /SDCROM/runinsraller.sh ) instead of the relative path (e.g. ./runinstaller.sh)

it worked!

Re: Java Screen disappears...

It was unfortunately intermittent. Something like power dips/surges on the routers.

Thanks for the ideas anyway Steve.
