Kana-Kanji

What is the Kana-Kanji conversion server used for?

The reason I ask:

I just installed HP-UX 11i on a C240 workstation.

During boot I get:
Starting kks daemon ................................................. OK

but during shutdown I get:
Stopping kks daemon ....................................... FAIL *

I looked at /etc/rc.log and it pointed me to /sbin/rc2.d/S640kks

It doesn't say what it is used for ... it basically says:
# Kana-Kanji conversion Server start/stop script

I don't think it matters that the shutdown fails, but i'm just curious.

Re: Kana-Kanji

I would assume it's some sort of character mapping for japanese text.

Re: Kana-Kanji

Hi,
The Kana Kanji is a conversion library (libjpn)
for Japanese language.
Japanese consists of three
different character sets so that we cannot do direct keyboard input like English.
We first type out the pronunciation on the key board, then convert the input
string into a mixture of kana, kanji, and Roman characters by convert key,
finally accept the converted string by enter key.

Did you take a backup?

Re: Kana-Kanji

Hello,
I assume that you have installed the japanese version of hpux on your machine.
you can see the man pages for kkstat and kks for details.

Re: Kana-Kanji

I did not specifically install japanese support. I remember that it defaults to "Global" and none of the individual languages were selected. They all had "no" including English. But I did set the default language to English with Null_Locale.

I guess i could have deselected global and selected english and that would have installed only the english modules. I didn't know if i would be missing any functionality in being able to display international characters if i did that, so i didn't and accepted the defaults.
