Kernel Panic/DMA Problem, Suse 10.1, Compaq Presario RS480 Chipset

Hello,

i've tried to install Suse 10.1 at my Compaq machine. Unfortunately Suse is crashing into a Kernel Panic each time i boot the OS without using the ide=nodma option. After several searches with google i think the problem may be the chipset on my motherboard.

Here are some infos about my system:
00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS480 Host Bridge (rev 10)
00:02.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS480 PCI-X Root Port
00:12.0 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller
00:13.0 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 USB Host Controller
00:13.1 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 USB Host Controller
00:13.2 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 USB2 Host Controller
00:14.0 SMBus: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 SMBus Controller (rev 11)
00:14.1 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller ATI
00:14.3 ISA bridge: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 PCI-ISA Bridge
00:14.4 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 PCI-PCI Bridge

I know that the problem is known for around 2 years now. Is there a workaround or a fix or something? The thing is, using Suse without DMA is a pain because of the missing speed. Everything takes ages :(

I hope someone knows an answer. And just to let you know, i am a Linux beginner so i kindly ask you for your patience.

Thank you,
Thomas

Shalom,

Get the diag cd/dvd from the website or computer box.

Boot the system, run full diagnostics and identify the hardware problem. Then replace the part.

Hi Steven,

thanks for your answer. Unfortunately i didn't found any Linux tools to check my hardware.

I really hope it isn't really a hardware problem because the machine is brand new (2 months old) and i am somehow not willed to spend more than the already spent 1200 Euros into it.

I saw several times, that Linux got problems with the controller. I can't understand, that there's no patch from HP/Compaq nor a Bios Update :(

Nevermind, thank you for your help and i'll move on with my search for a tool to check my hardware.
