Here is a updated white paper from the HP Technology Forum.

It is the performance cookbook by Stephen Cuillo and Doug grummand. IT is written very well and I use it for reference often.

Kernel parameters for the most part allow the system to run the maximim amount of applications rather than tune the system to peform a certain way.
