LINUX Platform that has more market/demand now

Hi Guys,

I am planning to start work on a LINUX box.As this is the first time I am about to start on LINUX I would appreciate if some one could let me know if, learning which one of FEDORA 4.0/CentOS/Red Hat Linux would be good for now.
I am looking to learn the LINUX OS which has good market , widely used and in specific has more demand in the market rightnow.Guys,please advice me on this.

Hi Dave,

If you do not have current knowlidge of Linux. I would go for RH or Suse. Both can be ordered by HP and you could get support from HP on both "brands".

I have worked with Redhat Linux and find it really good. This is used very much across our enterprise.
The best would be to go either RedHat or Suse this experience will help you very much.

Centos and XOS are Red Hat Enterprise Linux GPL portions repackaged without the trademarks.

They work exactly the same. I have a cluster that contains one RH ES 4.0 member and 1 Centos 4.1 member.

Red Hat is still the industry 800 pount gorilla.

Because Linux is open source/GPL there are many distributions that are task/category specific.

As the Late Mr. Scott used to say on Star Trek the right tool for the right job.

Fedora Core 4.0, Ubuntu Linux will be a good distros to get start. I use Ubuntu Linux in my personal laptop, it is really good.

Hi Dave,
it depends from the kind of support are you looking for, and the functionalities inside:
for example I use Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 ( RHEL ) that is a pay-product, but the cause are that we cannot sell solutions 100% open source and without support...
But on my own, I use Fedora without any problem.

Also SLES ( Suse based )is a good choice, but it's also a pay-product, if you want its free brother choose SUSE.

The other version I know is Knoppix, that has a formidable capacity of recognize also unknown and weird hardware...

So I can tell this:
FREE PRODUCT ( in order of my preferences ):
1)FEDORA CORE
2)SUSE LINUX
3)KNOPPIX ( for rescue purposes )

Hi,

I may say Suse is the "limousin" compared with other linux versions, as it's the easiest one to use for end user, but after Suse acquired by Novell, there is only one personal edition of Suse exists remians "free". There is a LiveCD of SUSE personal edition also, which you can boot from cd and use it without installing it. I've tested it, and used internet, connected to windows network using Samba, printed out documents etc, without installing linux on my computer.

After Redhat become commercial, free version continued as Fedora, and Fedora 4 is also very user friendly and will help much you to learn linux.

For Personal use i prefer; 1- SUSE, 2- Fedora 4

I would prefer Ubuntu or Debian if i would be configuring a server. But if it will be necessary to get support from vendor, i would prefer Suse Enterprise Linux, and Redhat Enterprise Linux.

My choice is either RedHat Enterprise Linux or Fedora Core 4

If you are ready to pay (sizable amount) then you can go for Redhat for which you will get subscription and official support from RedHat.

Otherwise you can go on with Fedora Core 4 (which is freeware clone of Redhat desktop edition), if you have problems either post them here or anywhere around the world and I am sure you will get the solution.

SUSE on the other hand is a second best distribution to try out. Both RedHat and SUSE shares sizable percentage of Linux distributions installed worldwide.
