Linux Does Not Boot w/ External RAID Plugged In
I am running SuSe Linux Enterprise 8 that boots up fine off of the internal RAID array. As soon as I plug in one of the external arrays, the following message comes up:
blk: queue c0470530, I/O limit 4294967295Mb (mask 0xffffffffffffffff)
cciss/c1d0:
And the start-up process is halted. This array is plugged into an HP Smart Array 6404 controller.
Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Re: Linux Does Not Boot w/ External RAID Plugged In
For HP/Compaq servers external disk arrays need to be configured in advance of OS installation. Each server has a bootable cd downloadable from the hp website that you use to set up the system prior to os install.
Of thats not possible, you might want to make sure the external scsi id doesn't conflict with any internal scsi hardware.

Re: Linux Does Not Boot w/ External RAID Plugged In
Also, it depends where in the boot sequence
that the new unit is identified.
I have a fast/wide SCSI disk that is normally
SDA. When I added a new controller and new disk, it moved the master to SDB, so I had booting problems until i remedied the situation.

Re: Linux Does Not Boot w/ External RAID Plugged In
The issue was resolved by passing: "acpi=oldboot" to the kernel at boot. The issue appears to be specific to SuSe 8 (any service pack) on ProLiant servers.
