You seemed very severe with Albert, assigning only 1 point to his - right - answer.

Trying to explain :

Before CUPS, linux printing was limited to few postscript and Epson printers, plus HP Laserjet 4, 5 and 6 series (which means black&white PCL5 printers).

With CUPS, a large number of drivers had been developed, including color inkjet printers.

CUPS is included in latest (modern) Linux distributions (SuSE 7.2, Mandrake 8.0).

CUPS needs GhostScript to convert graphic file formats to printer-compatible data.

Additional information : at the beginning of 2001, HP decided to launch and supervise opensource projects for porting the whole range of printer drivers to Linux. Therefore, features was added to GhostScript in order to support HP best quality color rendering options.

Another information :

CUPS is not the only printing program supporting HP printers. Normally, RedHat comes with built-in printing system, which can be configured using "printtool" graphical utility. To have it work with HP opensource drivers, you must have GhostScript version 6.5 or 7.0 (which comes with HP patches), and possibly other patches provided by HP. The complete information is at :
