Well, I'm not sure if this will be much help, but you need to get the latest i810 X-Free86 driver (included in X-Free 4.2.0 aparently), and use that.

http://www.matrixlist.com/pipermail/leaplist/2002-April/019341.html

That's a post regarding someone using it that gives a link to someone else who gave basic information as to how they got it working, and a link to Intel's site stating what's requried to get it working.

Simplest solution however is to upgrade ro RH7.3 as the 'rawhide' distribution includes the required driver.
One long-haired git at your service...

Mandrake 8.2 is best for configuring X windows.

Re: Linux7.2 on HP omnibook510

I agree with Stuart. 7.2 doesn't work "out of the box" on a 510. I've installed 510's several times. In the past, I would have a CD with the latest XFree86 on it to get X working - but now I just install RH7.3 or Suse 8.0 Pro. Both of them work great.

One thing I will mention is that I come up to run level 3 and run startx manually; I use an external monitor and XF86 guesses the wrong monitor timing settings when it comes up to run level 5 at boot. Running startx manually seems to work ok, though. Strange......

Re: Linux7.2 on HP omnibook510

you can bypass the hard-coded video memory limit in HP Omnibook 510.

HP Omnibook 510 with Debian GNU/Linux "woody" is working in 16 & 24 bit modes (resolution 1024x768) with the instructions from Jon Gans website: http://www.jongans.com/gateway1450.html

With the new Bios 1.42 and with Xfree 4.3, there is no need to use i830-16bit.C program.
Configure Xfree with i810 default module.
