M$ doc files on HPUX?

I would like to be able to view .doc and .xls files that are attached to emails sent to my by well meaning co-workers of the Empire... Sun has "Star Office" but alas... I am completely HPUX here in the dungeon.

So... is there a way to view M$ docs on HPUX? (11.0)

Re: M$ doc files on HPUX?

There is a utility that converts word documents to HTML which could then be viewed from Netscape. If this will work for you you can find mswordview for HP-UX at the following URL:

http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Text/mswordview-0.5.2/

I forgot to mention that mswordview depends on zlib to be installed prior to installation you can download zlib at the following url:

http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Misc/zlib-1.1.3/

Hope this helps.

Good Luck,

Re: M$ doc files on HPUX?

I've already loaded zlib and mswordview on my box...but it is ONLY for Word version EIGHT (8) files... it is not backward compatable. Thanks though.

Re: M$ doc files on HPUX?

Well, you could download AbiWord and try to compile it for HP-UX. I know it is backward compatible to older versions of word. You can find the source at the following URL:

http://www.abisource.com/

INTERESTING! Any hints on building it for HPUX... compiling has always been somewhat of a mystery... how would I go about it?

Re: M$ doc files on HPUX?

Well, I normally download the BeOS ones, but from the looks of it you will need the following libs/utils installed:

xpat, libiconv, libpng, psiconv, unixfonts, and wv. You can get all of these from their server at the following url:

http://www.abisource.com/downloads/Version-0.7.13/crlf/

Each of these has an install script which should autodetect your OS(according to their install documentation) and install. Once everything is installed then install the abiword and it should work. Let me know how it turns out.

Re: M$ doc files on HPUX?

Hi!

There is a utility called "lhalw" to convert older word formats. I think word 6, 7, and sometimes a little bit of 8. You can download it from
http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~schwartz/pmh/index.html.

Re: M$ doc files on HPUX?

Jason...

what are the differences between the URL you sent me: the CRLF dir

http://www.abisource.com/downloads/Version-0.7.13/crlf/

and the LF directory:

and http://www.abisource.com/downloads/Version-0.7.13/lf

Seems like the CRLF dir is zipped files..and the LF dir is tar.gz With an HPUX J box wouldn't I need the tar.gz'd stuff versus the zipped stuff?
