Memory not released

Server DL580 g4
ram 8gb
swap 8 gb
hdd 4*146gb

When any application is run the swap memory shows 50% utilization and doesn't release it after the application is stopped.

That is an application bug and not an O.S. problem. What is the application? Is correctly stopped?

could you see any difference in "ipcs -a" before and after..

application can be any, like if we take backup thru DP6 it not release the memory after backup.
IBM WAS 6.0.1 is running on the server.

I mean, what is "free" output before you start any application?
and after your application is started?

Before 10% utilized
after backup 50 %
but the strange thing is tar backup goes off smoothly without locking memory.
