Migrate Oracle 9.2.0 from HP-UX PA-RISC to HP-UX IA/64

I am planning an Oracle database (version 9.2) migration from an HP-UX PA-RISC based server (RP8400) to an HP-UX I/A based server (RX8620). I would like to migrate via the 'cold' cloning method where the database will be shutdown and the database data files will be copied to the HP-UX I/A server. Is that possible or will I encounter character set compatibility issues?

Shalom,

Since you are keeping the same version of the database you will minimize the troubles.

Oracle does have data migration steps. Those are found in one of two places:
http://technet.oracle.com
http://metalink.oracle.com

The latter requires an Oracle support contract.

The database datafiles you can easily cold copy them over without any problems.

But you didn't mention if you are aware that there is a different version of the oracle binaries for ia64 that you need to install and configure to access the cold copied data files. Of course if you have any apps running on the same server (or other servers that access this database) you need to check them for ia64 compatibility.

I am okay with the mechanics of the migration from one server to another server from a DBA perspective. My question is mainly in regards to database data file compatability. Can the database data files be copied from PA-RISC to IA/64 or will I have compatability issues between the two classes of servers.

I think that you're asking if your datafiles are compatible from PA-RISC to IA64. That is, can you just moved you data files to the new server, and bring up your data there, without a whole import/export process. Right?

If that's your question, then, from what I understand, you're in luck.

All you'd have to do after moving your files, is bring up the ORACLE_HOME software at the same version (preferably), and then apply any one-off patches that are mandatory for IA64 that may not have been mandatory for the PARISC distro. At that point, I'd recommend go ahead and migrate up to Oracle 10g or 11g, Since 9i is now dead, sad, but true.

Now, that being said, you *could* copy your files over, then build up the new Oracle HOME in 10g or 11g, and then just run the migration to the new version on the spot and in place.

I think a more conservative approach would be to start on the new platform at the same level as before, and then migrate up to your desired version from there.

Many thanks TTr. Yes, I know I have to re-install the binaries (oracle software). You answer makes my day. :-)

Many thanks TwoProc. Yes, initially the database will be migrated as is and then an upgrade to 10.2.0.4 will occur once the 9i migration and validation is complete. :-)

We'd done the same successfully for a 12 TB database.
You shouldn't face any problems with the file-headers.
