What are our options? Is VXFS 5.0 really OS/Platform independent that if I've my cooked storage on VxFS 5.0 on HP-UX - that I can move storage accross platforms?
What about if my Oracle DB is stored as RAW (ASM or plain raw)?

SolutionDepending on the platforms you have issues with the "Endian Format" of the datafiles.
If you are on Oracle 10g then there are "Cross-Platform Transportable Tablespaces". These allow you transfer tablespaces between different OS's. This can be done via RMAN.
Have a look through your Oracle docs for more information on the "Cross-Platform Transportable Tablespaces".

Re: Migrate multi-TB Oracle DB to HP-UX
Are you in Vegas this week? At the very moment I write this my buddy Umesh Pahtak is doing session #1612 "Failover and Migration of Oracle Database Between HP 9000 (PA-RISC) Servers and HP Integrity (IPF) Servers"
Sounds like that would be of interest.
If you are here, then seek out Umesh, or Email him or me and at least get the slides.
hth,
Hein.

Re: Migrate multi-TB Oracle DB to HP-UX
Hein, yes I am here in Vegas Sir. But too late on thine reply.. Anyways, I've already alerted my DBAs to the various possibilities.
We'll be testing when I go back both XTTS and VxVM PDC/VxFS approaches.

Re: Migrate multi-TB Oracle DB to HP-UX
If you're moving from HP PARisc to HP Integrity - the database files don't need to be exported and imported - they are good where they are.
I would think that even your raw files can be redeployed as raw files on the destination system.
If you're doing Sun to HP - you may have to run the import/export - but I think I read some time back that Oracle made efforts to start using singular database file formats across platforms, with the exception being Intel 386ish formats, as with those, I would imagine your basically migrating little-endian to big-endian binary formats (or vice-versa, right now I forget which is which).

Yes, HP-UX is big-endian.

Re: Migrate multi-TB Oracle DB to HP-UX
It appears Oracle 10G's (luckily our version) Cross Platform Transaportable Tablespaces will do the trick. And the fact that SPARC and PARISC (IA64) have the same "Endianess" make things a little better.
