Migration to 11i

Hi,
we are going to migrate a lot of HP servers from hp-ux 11.0 or 10.20 to 11i. Most of them have Oracle databasees up and running (different versions, at least 8.1.7).

Is there any documentation which tells me what is needed for such an migration ?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Migration to 11i

Hi,

till now i haven't heard of successful migration from 10.2 to 11.0 or to 11i.
(even i tried and failed). Better way is backup the database. do the cold install of OS which gives you the cleaner environment and retrieve the database from backup.

Most links are consolidated off of:
http://devrsrc1.external.hp.com/STK/hpux_faq.html
Including links to docs.hp.com which has the upgrade instructions.

Re: Migration to 11i

Christiane,

See the "Installation and Update Guide" at:
http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/os/11i/index.html

Also, most everyone will tell you that you're better off doing a cold-install rather than an upgrade, especially when transitioning from 10.20.

Re: Migration to 11i

Hi again,

thanks for all answers !

Unfortunately my question was not clear; of course we are doing an cold installation of 11i. What I would like to know is, if there is any hint on wich patches (for instance) are needed for which ORACLE version; if there is anything we need to think of by duming the database, reinstalling ORACLE and importing the dump.

Any ideas ?

Thanks again,

Re: Migration to 11i

Actually, after you install the equivalent version of Oracle on your 11.11 box along with the equivalent Oracle patches, you can simply transfer the data to the new box directly. As long as you restore the data to the same pathnames, the database will startup in the new environment with absolutely no changes. I have actually done this several times.

Your Oracle installation documentation for HP-UX will also list any required OS patches required for your version of HP-UX.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Migration to 11i

I am moving 11.00 systems to 11.11 right now.

The docs posted are great, I'll add some practical experience.

1) Forget in place mirgration. If the move is 32 bit to 64 bit for example the oracle database will have to be installed from scratch and the data migrated either through database cloning or export/import

2) Designer Repository will require a clean install of an empty Repository followed by a migration of the Repository data from old system to new.

The good news is, if your oracle datafiles(non-repository) are on an external disk array, you can get away with installing the correct oracle versions on the new system and then transfer control of the virtual/physical disks to the new system.

If you follow the install guide for Oracle the database server installation is a breeze. It takes 20 minutes on an L2000 dual 550 MHz processors with 2G of RAM.

Gosh, I love new hardware.

Re: Migration to 11i

Clarification...

Before I try to shaw my gem of wisdom ;-) let me be sure we are clear...

You have 10.2 and 11.0 HPUX running Oracle Databases.
You are looking to upgrade to HPUX 11i.

I have migrate from 10.2 up to 11 (HPUX 11i doesn't support Oracle Apps 10.7).

I bought a new server. Installed the database files there. And exported/ imported my database in. I was running the June 2002 HP patch set. Ran fine. No problems.

I applied 1-2 additional patches that were docuemnted on the Oracle CD docuemntation/ Readme.

Note: You MUST install new Oracle Database files if moving off of 10.20 ... the object files changed and Oracle was re-compiled.
