Make sure the drive is presented in a way that Linux understands. It should show up when the system boots. BIOS defaults usually does the trick

It is possible the disk is dead. Is it recognized by bios or boot utilities?

The system was running windows 2000 proffessional.Hard disk is well recognized by bios.I think its something to do with SATA.

hi venkat,

have a look at the homepage of your sata controller manufactor. searc for a driver disk for redhat enterprise linux 3.0 and use this disk to install a driver into setup to detect your hdd.

best regards

Hi

I think by defualt there is no driver on RedHat 3.0 for SATA. To make this resognize during installation you should have a driver disk downloaded from the vendor site and provide this during installation. We had run into similar problems with new disk array controller and we had to do this.

I have searched the seagate site and the HP site also but couldn't find any drivers.

Re: No hard drive found in RHEL 3.0 installation

Given that SATA controllers really didn't find their way into the Linux kernel (properly) until late 2.4 or 2.6 series of kernels, the RHES3 series probably doesn't have any native support.

I'd advise trying to install RHES3 UP3, and see if that works, otherwise try get a copy of SuSE Pro 9 (as it's listed in the supported list).

I couldn't find what SATA controller was in use on that class of machine, so I don't know where to go to look for drivers for it.
