ORA-01190: controlfile or data file 1 is from before the last RESETLOGS

I am using Oracle 9i and Window XP:

I day before yesterday successfully Incompletely recovered the same database, which I tried again to recover incompletely because I wanted to learn more.

I was trying to recover a table I lost accidently. I used the following command:

C:\> STARTUP MOUNT PFILE=c:\oracle\Test_Machine\ordb9i04\pfile\init.ora

The connection was successful and I typed:

SQL> RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE UNTIL TIME '2005-01-18:21:26:00';

And then all hell loose broke on me:

I got the following:

SQL> recover database using backup controlfile until time '2005-01-18:21:26:00';
ORA-00283: recovery session canceled due to errors
ORA-01190: controlfile or data file 1 is from before the last RESETLOGS
ORA-01110: data file 1: 'C:\ORACLE\ORADATA\ORDB9I04\SYSTEM01.DBF'

I tried to copy back old backup copies to the target files, I tried the backup copies of the files I backed up after RESETLOGS, but in vain, NOTHING WORKS. PLEASE REPLY.

Also, take a look at google for the ORA-01190 error messages and you'll find some forum posts on Oracle's side of things.

Hi Muhammad,

When you say you had performed a incomplete recovery successfully. Now the same database, when you try again to recover it fails.

When you tried the second time did you do the following.

Shutdown the database that you recovered earlier, restore the datafiles, redologs and controlfiles from the backup into their respective directories. And then tried to recover.

If you did so you should be able to recover it and open the database.

The error â ORA-01190: controlfile or data file 1 is from before the last RESETLOGS â occurs when you are attempting to use a data file when the log reset information in the file does not match the control file. This could be because either the data file or the control file is a backup that was made
before the most recent ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS.

Restore files from a more recent backup and then try to recover.

I forgot one more thing.

You mentioned that you tried the backup copies of the files that you backed up after RESETLOGS.

Please try to copy form a previous successfull backup.
