Simpler Navigation for Servers and Operating Systems
Completed: a much simpler Servers and Operating Systems section of the Community. We combined many of the older boards, so you won't have to click through so many levels to get at the information you need. Check the consolidated boards here as many sub-forums are now single boards.

ORA-27146: post/wait initialization failed

I am receiving this error when attempting to start a second Oracle 8.1.6 instance on HP-UX 11. Any ideas?

Re: ORA-27146: post/wait initialization failed

Lack of available semaphore structures. Have you tuned your kernel as recommended by Oracle and also several recent forum threads.

Re: ORA-27146: post/wait initialization failed

Check Kernel Parameters:

Shared Memory SHMMAX 1 GB

(This setting does not affect how much shared memory is
needed or used by Oracle8i or the operating system. It is used only to indicate the maximum allowable size.)

If any of the kernel parameters are less than your current values, continue to use the current value. These are the requirements for Oracle8i only. If you have other programs that use shared memory and semaphores, you need to adjust the values accordingly.
Tell me what you need, and I'll tell you how to get along without it!
