On Ignite & fbackup running parallely

Hi All,

I have a basic question. Is it recommended to run a Ignite backup as well as Filesystem backup simultaneously on one system?

Thanks in advance.

Re: On Ignite & fbackup running parallely

I'm not sure if I understand "simultaneously" correctly in this context, but ignite is for OS, fbackup for data.

So you should use both.

Hope this helps!

Re: On Ignite & fbackup running parallely

Hi Torsten,

Thanks for your response. My query is - suppose we need to have both an ignite backup as well as a complete filesystem backup. In case of time limitations, can we fire both kind of backups simultaneously (on a single system). Or should we wait until one finishes. Will there be any sharing violation or other issues?

Re: On Ignite & fbackup running parallely

Hi:

You could run both your Ignite and your 'fbackup' simultaneously, performance permitting. Ignite uses 'pax' to perform its copies. 'fbackup' only "cares" about files that actively change from the time their backup begins until they are safely ensconced on the tape. In the event that a file changes while being backed up, 'fbackup' will mark that copy "bad" and retry again up to the number of times specified in the 'fbackup' configuration file. See the 'fbackup' manpages for details.

Regards!

Re: On Ignite & fbackup running parallely

Are you saying that you have two tape drives and both backups are running at the same time? This would be a performance nightmare as you have two very intense serial read processes going on at the same time. If you have high performance tape drives such as DDS4, DLT80 or any of the LTO/Ultrium tape drives, your system probably can't feed the data fast enough to both processes. This means that the tape drives will be stopping, backing up and restarting every few seconds (which causes severe wear on the tape heads and drive mechanics) and increases the backup time by 3x-5x longer.

Re: On Ignite & fbackup running parallely

based on your question:

They are not separate things you mentioned; ignite is used for file system OR OS backup.
You need to make clear that ,What do you need other than file system backup ?

Re: On Ignite & fbackup running parallely

missed something,

you need data files , use fbackup everybody stated here, then you need second tape unit if you do parallel backup.
